SIC is a broad-based community advisory group comprised of parents, teachers, and community members established in every school. This advisory group works with the principal to cultivate a positive school environment supporting student success.

School Improvement Council Minutes – 10/9/24
1) Welcome
2) Introductions
a. Mrs. P Profit, Mrs. M. Profit, L. Johnson, J. Abraham, H. Maxwell, K. Simpson, T. Brinkley
3) Elections for Chairman, Co-Chairman, and Secretary
a. Mrs. Profit described each role of the members of the committee. Each committee member needs to know the by-laws and the responsibilities of this position. We will decide positions at our next meeting. We will move the meeting time to 4:15.
4) Old Business
a. Real Men Read Update
i. Real Men Read Conversation- Highest # that we’ve ever had (35 sign up)- incentives like Chick-fi-A and $100 gift card—Thompson brings in someone to come a speak to the young men
b. AED
i. PTSA raised the money to buy AED, but the district ended up buying one for the school last year. We have one in the office and one in the gym.
5) New Business
a. Review/Approve SIC By-laws
i. Profit briefly reviewed the by-laws. SIC is to write an annual report to parents and send it out in the spring- It shows community what we have going on here. In regards to the member bylaws, we want to take our numbers from 3 community members to 2. The state requires at least 2 and we want to update our bylaws to reflect the state requirement. We also discussed the contradictory statements in Articles 5 and 6. We would like to see committee members serve 2 years.
ii. We will review and approve new bylaws at the next meeting.
b. DMS Annual Goals
i. Data information- We looked at a PowerPoint of our school successes for SC Ready data.
ii. Initiatives going well at school- Motivation Monday, inflatable costumes, Ren Rallies, celebrating everyone, Students of the Month, High-Five Friday at DMS and elementary school next door, Reeves, local community members (church members) beautify the school, barber shop partner, Reality Town, Beacon’s group, STEM group, Tireless Teacher, SRO of the Year, Officer Jones, steel drums program, Fine Arts, dance programs
iii. Then, we talked about DMS areas of need and the action plan for each of these areas.
iv. We discussed some initiatives we would like to start and discuss more on for the next meeting.

b. S. Young volunteered to help when M. Kaple is having her cancer treatments.

a. Meeting Time Review
i. Elected to keep time from 4:15-5:15
b. Review/Approve SIC By-Laws
i. Updated Article 3A (1, 2, and 3 are all being changed to 2, which is the state minimum.)
ii. Article 5A- Changing to 1 year
5) New Business
a. Volunteer Process Update
i. Raptor was explained. It’s a new program we are using for safety at DuBose. When a parent volunteers to help at the school, Raptor will do a quick background check on the volunteer. Raptor does a thorough job in checking the background by a person’s driver’s license. This school year, we have 67 approved volunteers as opposed to last year’s 11.
b. Vision Statement Review
i. We propose that “world class” be removed and replaced with something
ii. Not loving “rigorous and relevant”
iii. Ask the district- Can the vision and mission statement be merged to “Purpose and Mission” or something similar.
c. School Needs
i. Reality Town
ii. The courtyard could use some love. We want to revamp the courtyard. We will start small and start discussing some changes. M Kable discussed bringing some members of the garden club to make it nicer.

a. Vision Statement Review
i. Mr. Abraham will use AI to get a starting point for some ideas. Looking to shorten the vision statement.
b. School Needs
i. Outdoor classroom
1. Will hold off until the Spring
2. Seating is a priority
3. Brinkley would like to see that area covered.
ii. Courtyard
1. Brinkley will follow up on the summer plan to redo all the concrete in the courtyard area this summer. If that is going to happen, we will hold off on courtyard revamp plans. If not, we will move forward.
2. When the revamp is being planned, we want to bring in the student ideas
iii. Financial Literacy Week
1. Mr. Abraham shared some information he obtained from a civil rights lawyer in regards to the Federal Reserve assisting schools with planning a financial literacy week. He has a call into the federal reserve
iv. Inclusivity
1.Getting the staff and students more engaged with our special needs students. Cookie sales has been successful and positively received. Profit talked about United Track & Field. Getting the students and staff encouraged to attend meets to celebrate our DMS athletes who are participating.
3)New Business
a. Real Women Read
i. Committee feels that the need is more about self-confidence/empowerment group for girls.

i. We discussed that we like a lot of the vocabulary. We decided that we wanted to shorten the statement. We looked over and discussed different ideas. We decided to come back to this at our next meeting.
b. Financial Literacy Week- no updates
i. Mr. Abraham is working on this to discuss at our next meeting.
c. Real Men Read Meeting Incentives
i. Update- Jan. 31st- M. Kaple will be talking with them about the impact of books. The incentive is for the students to read books and do book reports to be put in a drawing to win a free book. They can turn their book reports to Mr. Thompson or Dr. Mandrell in the DMS Media Center.
d. Courtyard renovation will begin this summer. New foursquare court, basketball court, and volleyball court.

- Real Men Read Participation Criteria- Ms. Kaple discussed the information about the book report and success of the incentives.
- Ms. Kaple mentioned discipline issues of students that are in RMR.
- We discussed concerns with students in RMR vs. Beacons.
- Idea by Ms. Young- come up with a reason to be in RMR-- write a poem, write a "why" paragraph, make a video, etc.
- Discussed counting book reports as extra credit (Talk with ELA dept. about what percentage a grade)
- Run it by Mr. Thompson, ELA dept, Dr. Mandrell, and other members of SIC
